| Child labor has been a passion of mine since reading the book Free the Children from the United Methodist Women’s reading list. I was so moved after reading this book I shared it with my freshman class and founded a club at my high school. Our club has done several presentations to communicate to our peers the plight of child laborers. The Free the Children organization believes that one way to alleviate child labor is to take the children out of factories and put them into schools. Our group understands that education is freedom and knowledge is power. This is why for the last 2 years we have been fundraising and to date we have raised over $1,700 to go towards maintenance of a Free the Children school in Managua, Nicaragua. Participating in the Children’s World Congress on Child Labor would be valuable to me, as a youth activist, and United Methodist Women. It would deepen my understanding of the issue and help me to reach out to more people and network internationally. I feel that organizations from different venues can come together and make a tremendous difference in the lives of children around the world. We are all working to accomplish the same goal; the eradication of child labor. | |
